“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 3:11
We have spent time preparing the soil. We’ve broken up the fallow ground and torn down the old, religious ways of thinking that kept us stagnant. Now, it is time to lay the only foundation that actually matters: Jesus Christ.
But what does it actually mean to build your life on the Rock? It is a phrase we use often in the church, yet we frequently miss the structural reality of what Jesus is saying. To build on the Rock is to move past the temporary and the superficial and anchor yourself into the eternal.
Beyond Performance
Many of us have been taught that obedience to Christ is a performance issue. We think we had better behave, or else. We carry this heavy weight into our faith because, at some point in our lives, love and affection were withheld from us when we failed to meet an expectation. We learned that acceptance was a reward for good behavior rather than a gift of grace.
But Jesus doesn’t see obedience as a behavioral issue. He sees it as a relationship issue.
He says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). In the Kingdom of God, obedience isn’t about earning His affection; it’s the natural byproduct of receiving His affection. It is loving Him enough to recognize that His ways are simply the best ways to live. When we understand His heart, His commands stop feeling like a burden and start feeling like a boundary of protection.
The Chief Cornerstone
In ancient construction, the cornerstone was the foundation of the foundation. It was the first stone set, and every other stone in the entire building was aligned to it. If the cornerstone was off by even a fraction of an inch, the entire building would eventually lean and collapse.
Peter calls Jesus our Chief Cornerstone.
When Jesus is your foundation, He defines every other aspect of the house. Your identity, your relationships, your finances, and your worship all take their alignment from Him. You stop trying to behave for a distant judge and you start becoming like a loving Father because you are in constant relationship with Him. He becomes the standard by which every other wall in your life is measured.
A Spiritual House
You aren’t just building a better version of yourself. You are being built into a spiritual house.
As you come to Him—the Living Stone—you are being shaped into a priest. And priests offer sacrifices. But God isn’t looking for the blood of animals or the ritual of a religious holiday; He wants the sacrifice of a broken spirit and a contrite heart. He wants the real you, not the polished version you present on Sunday morning.
The incredible news of the Gospel is that Jesus has already become the right sacrifice for us. His blood makes our worship acceptable. We don’t have to be perfect to approach the throne; we just have to be founded on the One who is.
The Invitation
If your life feels unstable today, check your alignment. Are you trying to build on your own effort? Your own goodness? Your own survival skills? These are shifting sands that will fail you when the storm hits.
Jesus is extending an invitation to move beyond the distress and reproach of your ruins. He is calling a remnant to arise—survivors who are ready to stop being victims of their past and start being priests of the Most High. The result of this building project is worth every bit of effort, every tear, and every moment of surrender. It’s time to align with the Rock that is Christ.
